What Is a Rashi? Your Vedic Moon Sign Explained

If you already know your Western zodiac sign, it's tempting to assume your Vedic rashi is the same thing with a different name. It usually isn't, and the reason why is worth understanding before you read any Vedic astrology content, including your own Kismat report.

Sun sign vs. moon sign

A Western sun sign is based on where the Sun sat in the tropical zodiac on your birth date, it only depends on your date of birth, not your birth time. A Vedic rashi is based on where the Moon sat in the sidereal zodiac at your exact birth time, it's a completely different calculation, using a different zodiac reference point (sidereal, aligned to the fixed stars, versus tropical, aligned to the seasons) and a different planet entirely.

Because the Moon moves through the entire zodiac in about 27.3 days, roughly 2.25 days per sign, your rashi can only be pinned down accurately with a real birth time. Someone born early in the morning and someone born late at night on the same date can easily end up with different rashis.

Why Vedic astrology centres the Moon

The Moon governs the mind, emotional patterns and instinctive reactions in Vedic astrology, the theory being that your outward personality (often closer to your sun sign) and your inner emotional operating system (your rashi) are genuinely different layers, not the same thing described twice.
