What Is a Nakshatra? Your Birth Star Explained

If you've only ever read Western horoscopes, your "sign" probably means your sun sign, Aries, Taurus and so on. Vedic astrology works differently. The single most important placement in a Vedic chart is where the Moon sat at the moment you were born, and specifically which nakshatra it was in.

The sky, divided into 27 pieces

A nakshatra is one of 27 equal segments the zodiac is divided into, each spanning 13°20′. As the Moon moves through the sky over about 27.3 days, it passes through all 27 in turn, spending roughly a day in each. Whichever one it was passing through at your exact birth time and place is your birth star, your nakshatra.

Each nakshatra is further divided into 4 padas (quarters), so your placement is really one of 108 possible positions, not just 27. That's part of why two people born on the same day, even the same city, can still have meaningfully different charts if their birth times differ by a few hours.

Why it matters more than your sun sign

Your nakshatra anchors the Vimshottari dasha system, the sequence of planetary periods that Vedic astrology uses to time events in your life (we cover this in a separate guide). It also carries its own personality signature, independent of your moon sign or rising sign, more granular, more specific.
